Pregame "Halo Effects" favor Brits
The US Eagles deserved better than the sham of a 2007 Rugby World Cup match they were dealt in Lens, France, Saturday, 8 September.
I’m referring to the elitist attitude of the pompous Rugby World Cup media; the missing-in-action (MIA) officials of the Eagles’ opening match against the defending champs, England; and the Rugby World Cup culture of relegating "minnows," like the US, to sideshow roles.
The whole pregame buildup was all about the English professional stars. They monopolized all print journalism and the air times. Nothing was mentioned of the US Eagles, except that they were one of the three minnows (U.S.A., Tonga, Sâmoa) in Pool A.
As the Rugby World witnessed, the 28-10 England victory was a disappointing performance:
- The Eagles were the more aggressive side.
- The Brits failed to earn the maximum five points for a pool victory.
- Captain Phil Vickery, prop #3, is by now disqualified (two weeks ban) from their much-anticipated clash with South Africa.
- The officials missed some heavyweight calls.
